Attention Purizu or Attention Please

Review of a 🇯🇵 Japanese TV comedy drama

The Japanese letters for L and R are similar that the people often use one for the other. That is how Attention Please became Attention Puriau.

This Japanese TV drama is based on old manga. It was adapted for TV in the 70s and in 2006. I saw the latter version.

Misako is a tomboyish girl who finishes school and decides to become air stewardess on a whim. She joins Japan Airlines as a trainee and gave the airline their best free advertisement ever.

Despite subtle and not-so subtle suggestions that she is also a woman and should act like one, Misako thinks she can wing it as air hostess.

Still

She gains a few friends …

Still

… but the rest of cadets think she should quit.

Still

Even the trainers think so. Her coach does not give up on her.

Still

Misako remains defiant for the longest time but reluctantly makes changes.

Still

Air hostesses are not there to just serve refreshments. They undergo a lot of training on several aspects of flight travel.

On the last day of on-the-job training, the trainers join the cadets on a flight. As luck would have it, there is an emergency.

Still

Misako acts with alacrity and saves the day.

Still

In the end, her indefatigable energy and persistence wins praise from her superiors and colleagues.

Still

Unlike most such stories, Misako remains unrepentant and causes considerable mayhem. There is not much romance so most of it is just fun.

In all, there are 11 episodes. And, two special feature-length TV movies. One is set in Hawaii and the other in Australia. Nobody would have thought Misako would become an instructor but she does.
