Teke Teke

Review of a 🇯🇵 Japanese horror movie

Animation

Japanese horror stories tend to follow certain 'tropes'. Betrayed but vengeful lover coming back as a ghost is popular. Ghost hiding in the school toilet is a good one. One interesting trope that I enjoyed very much was that of teke teke. I became interested in it after seeing a movie involving another famous trope — the spider woman (not Spiderwoman). She was delightfully referred to as the turbo hag in the subtitles of the movie Dark Tales of Japan.

Teke Teke is different. She is entirely human but the bottom half is missing. She is the ghostified upper body of a schoolgirl who was run over by a train. Teke Teke lifts herself on her hands and moves with amazing speed. The Teke Teke name refers to the noise she makes with her long hard nails when she chases her victims. Teke Teke stalks people near railway stations and kills them.

In 2009, two Teke Teke movies were made. Both are good.
